Understanding Your Mind, Mood, and Hormone Cycle was written for women who want to understand the sometimes, confusing physical and psychological changes they experience each month. It is also suggested reading for men who deal with hormonal women daily; and for educators, healthcare and social welfare professionals who support women of all ages that are struggling with physical and behavioral issues caused by hormonal changes. It is the product of a nine-years of research, analysis, and writing. This richly illustrated, pioneering, book is co-authored by Leslie Carol Botha and H. Sandra Chevalier-Batik, with original graphics by Nicholas Batik. Medical researcher, H. Sandra Chevalier-Batik provides extensive clinical background to support the findings of this book. The conversational writing style makes it easy and compelling to read, while the richly footnoted text makes this a valuable resource for professional healthcare providers. The book explores on the very essence of a woman’s being — the fundamental nature of the female hormone cycle; and was written to fill the void of practical, menstrual health education that focuses on understanding the delicate mind/body connection — a connection that has the power to bring about health or disease in the body. Contrary to current medical thinking and pharmaceutical industry messaging that encourages women to deny, ignore, suppress and replace their natural hormone production with synthetic hormone birth control and hormone replacement therapy, Botha and Chevalier-Batik believe that the hormone cycle is the foundation of women’s health and well being. Modern medicine has promoted the concept of specialization, encouraging women to consult specialists to treat isolated aspects of our body and mind, rather than consider our body as an integrated system, and exploring the relationship of the hormone cycle with other cycling systems in our body. Creating health begins with a shift in this perspective to one that recognizes the whole body is greater than the sum of its parts; a shift that recognizes that health is our birthright and represents our natural state. Such a change in perception can change how we express vibrant health and inner peace. Using the tools and information provided in this book, women can learn to perceive symptoms as biometric feedback from our bodies about our diet, lifestyle and the state of our mental, emotional, and spiritual self. These symptoms are the “tell” for conditions such as hormone imbalances, depression, mental confusion, exhaustion, autoimmune disorders, allergies, and reproductive disorders. The purpose of this book, is to help you tap into the magnificent intelligence of your body and interpret its profound language to finally understand your mind, mood, and hormone cycle. Using the tools and exercises provided you will learn to live with in your hormone cycle to prevent re-occurring gynecological problems and mental/emotional imbalances; Perhaps for the first time in your life, you will feel like you can reach your full potential by acknowledging your strength and who you truly are. It is our goal to open your eyes to the real you — a woman who can trust herself, has confidence in her actions, understands her feelings and knows how to create a fulfilling life by living with her hormone cycle With brilliant simplicity, the authors tie the menstrual cycle into the other natural cycles of the universe and to the Paleolithic wise women who tracked their cycles on antler bones. These wise women understood that menstruation was vital natural cycle that held power. These foremothers became the first mathematicians, agriculturists, and healers by applying their menstrual wisdom to their culture’s survival. It is imperative that we understand all of the cycles in our lives. Women must be pro-active in all aspects of their wellness. Education and the willingness to ask questions and demand answers is a start.

I can not say that my period was ever a taboo for me. I have a Latinamerican background and honestly do not remember any major issue about getting the period more than avoiding to get stains.

But independently that the subject is approach different in Venezuela than in the States, what I can tell you is that I never learned the sacred part, the cyclical aspect and the correlation with the moon phases.

Since my early adulthood I have been facing big behavioral troubles which have lead to live some very difficult moments not just to me but also to people living wth me, meanly my partners. After my divorce (married at 22 and divorced at 28) and while being in another relationship, I started to notice a pattern: I started to notice that exactly 2 weeks before my period my behavior was awful, I was aggressive and very emotional. Now I feel like Aureliano Buendia when he discovered that the Earth was rounded and not flat as everybody else in Macondo thought.

That discovery lead me to stop taking the pill. I noticed that it was affecting me even more, and that maybe influenced a lot my behavior in the past years.

In the last years, after having my first son at 32, the patterns somehow got worse. I have been seeking for information, everything at the beginning was leading me to me having DPMS! And I was feeling depressed thinking I had a deserve nobody could understand, and medication has never been an option for me. However, I started to make changes in my diet, I started to replace carbohydrates in my diet, a diet more rich in fat and proteins, avoiding almost totally simple carbohydrates and sugars in general. And some months later I started not just to see results, but also to feel them. And even when I have always been physically quite active, I started to feel more energy and to work out more regularly. Then, my partner and I made the decision of removing the cooper spiral I had: NO MORE CONTRACEPTION. It was amazing to be released of the IUD. Then the changes were even more noticeable.

But even though the big progress, I was still feeling some fussiness the previous days to my period, so I continue seeking for information about "how to cure it", and then I found about this book.

OMG! How cool! Thanks God. Because after reading this book I am not seeking anymore for a cure. Now I understand that there is nothing to cure because my behavior is just normal, is part of my natural cycles. I will always from now see my period in a totally different way. I feel blessed to be a woman, I feel so proud! So happy! Now I want to know in which phase the moon is, I want to understand more about the connection with the moon, and it feels so nice now to be really aware of what is going on inside me, what is the endometrium and every other single part of my inner reproductive system... To understand what is going on.

I had some time already jotting down some aspects related to my period using an app, but now I want to really start this holy hormones diary the authors mention, I know that by doing it I will understand much more my cycle and then will be able to plan better my activities based on the phase of my cycle I am.

And for sure: I really want my partner to read the book! And he will, I know.

Again, thanks so much, thanks so much.

Brilliant writing and research. Graphics are original and phenomenal. This is a book whose time has finally come. A must read for every woman who wants to understand the integral sacred connection between her mind, mood and hormones. A must read for every man who wants to understand the sacred qualities of the woman in his life.
This book was okay....really wish it had more detail....would not recommend paying for this book.
Great for young ladies too
I am so happy to have the opportunity to sing the praises of this book. Our cycles never end. As long as we live, women cycle through the changes our bodies, hearts and minds go through. Here at last is important information about the connection between these aspects of our lives. It's been a long time coming and a 'must have' for women, young and old.

EVERY WOMAN - no, every person.... really should read and understand this book. This book taught me things I never knew about my body, my moods and my own health. Brava ladies! When is the next book coming out?
A lot of valuable info that is difficult to find somewhere else. Every woman should be given this knowledge. I am giving only 4 starts because the authors repeat themselves a lot. It is actually something that I find true for the majority of books written by americans authors. Not sure if it's something cultural to them. Anyways, maybe a bit boring sometimes due to the repeated material but still very valuable.
Living in a century replete with high technology and “fast everything,” we tend to forget some basics of life on planet Earth. For example, nature is directly correlated to the human body’s complex design and functions. That’s right. The moon and stars really do affect how we think and act.

In “Understanding Your Mind, Mood, and Hormone Cycle,” co-authors Leslie Carol Botha and H. Sandra Chevalier-Batik beckon us to understand the intimate relationship between our hormone cycle and its impact on our thoughts and emotions. They explain how we can become empowered by understanding the brain – nervous system connection so we can enhance our personal and professional relationships. Furthermore, we learn how our health can be improved by maintaining a natural hormone cycle to decrease the risk of serious medical conditions including depression, anxiety, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes.

“Understanding Your Mind, Mood, and Hormone Cycle” provides health-related insights for both women and men. This book is well-written, easy to understand, illustrated, and beautifully organized. Kudos to Botha and Chevalier-Batik for researching and writing a great book that explains how to react positively to the constant stress of living in the 21st century.
